Emergency Advice
Accidents do happen, but you can make the situation less stressful by knowing what to do in advance.
If you are involved in an accident, do the following:
- Stop, stay calm
- Don't panic
- Warn other motorists, avoid the risk of further accidents or injury by warning …other road users of the hazard – Do not put yourself or others in danger
- Don't admit blame—you can invalidate your insurance
- Dial 999 if necessary—you must if someone's hurt
- Exchange details with all other parties
When you exchange details with the other party/parties in the accident, make sure you get:
- Registration(s) of other vehicle(s) involved
- Names of people involved
- Addresses and telephone numbers of other people involved – ask them to show proof!. Do not take them at their word
- Insurance company or broker and whether they are the policy holder, named driver, or a company car driver
- Insurance policy number and name of the company they work for
- Get details from witnesses if you can
- Make a note of the scene; Record details of date, time and location of accident, traffic and weather conditions
- If you have a camera (don’t forget the one on your phone) take pictures of the accident scene with particular emphasis on where the vehicles have finished up, distance from junctions, weather conditions, etc.
- If required call your vehicle breakdown service
